Interview with Luciana Morfa
Amanda: Can you tell us what you’re most proud of about this book?
Luciana Morfa: I am most proud that I finished it! It’s the first book I ever finished and didn’t abandon! But in all seriousness, I’m proud of the whole book.
I love the characters, they are exactly who I pictured them in my mind. The chemistry between them, I was worried they wouldn’t mash well together but I could see them fall in love all on their own without me having to force it. The magic system, it wasn’t a hard magic system so I gave myself some wiggle room but I think it fit the world very well. The fight scenes, I come from the film world so having very movie inspired fight scenes would obviously show up and I think it came out great. The yearning for each other was 100% necessary for you to feel it alongside them. And I love the pace that I wrote the story in because I have a bad habit of writing in way to fast a pace.
Amanda: What is the most important thing you hope that readers get from this story?
Luciana: I hope that readers just enjoy my little romance story! I hope they learn that love has no boundaries. That if you’re meant to be with someone then nothing will stand between you both. I also hope they wish to learn more about Greek mythology if they hadn’t already!
Amanda: What are some themes you worked to tackle in this story?
Luciana: The book is very much forbidden romance. And I’m not a patient person in real life. If I like someone, I’m upfront about it and don’t beat around the bush. So it was very hard to not just come out of the gate with the romance, instead I had to let it build and do the whole ‘will they, won’t they’ thing between Hecate and Stef.
Another big tackle was Greek mythology. I grew up loving Greek mythology, but to do this story, I had to do a lot of research surrounding Hecate which was hard to do because there aren’t many solo myths about her. She is mostly the support character in the back. And I was tired of that so I definitely gave myself some leeway to fill in gaps to her personality and history.
Amanda: Are you a part of any writing groups or communities? How have they helped you in your writing and in your publishing journey?
Luciana: I am not part of any writing groups. I’m very solo in my writing journey. I do have my partner who is very happy to be a helping hand when I’m stuck with anything during my writing. They ask me all the hard questions that I didn’t think about so they’re good at catching all the plot holes in my writing. They were very happy to listen to me endlessly ask them to read and reread chapters, to help restructure magic systems or world building, and be my support during the struggle of not finding an agent wanting to publish Conjuring & Crossroads.
