August Reading Wrap Up & Blog Updates

Today’s Brew of Choice: cold brew with honey, oat milk & cardamom πŸ’•

Good morning everyone! I’m squeezing this post in here because there is no way that I can review every single book that I read but I still want to give them recognition! Here are all of the books that I read in August plus some blog updates and check-ins! Hope your August was wonderful and I hope you’re as ready for fall as I am!

PS. It’s my birthday month and I like to celebrate all month long! So I’ll be saying it constantly for the next two weeks! Don’t mind me!

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart

Thoughts

I’ve been meaning to read this book for so long and I finally got around to it! I am obsessed with the bone-shard magic system, it’s so interesting and well thought out. I was so surprised by the whole system that I can’t wait for book two!

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

Book Cover Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

Thoughts

This was a buddy read with Ahaana and we absolutely loved it. We were both drawn in right from the start from the rage against the patriarchy and how weirdly relatable Zetian was. I’m also so impressed with the pacing of this novel. I thought it was done so well, I really enjoyed it!

The Color of Your Voice by Daniel Newwyn

Thoughts

What an emotional novella! Set in Vietnam and dealing with heavy topics, this story is about love that can make you believe in dreams again. This story packs a big punch in such a short amount of space!

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

Thoughts

This was a buddy read with some of my friends from a book club that I adore. I was absolutely enchanted by the way that Rebecca Roanhorse uses lack of sight in different ways to emphasize a people’s closeness to the earth. I got chills thinking about it again.

In the Ravenous Dark by A.M. Strickland

Thoughts

I absolutely adored the world-building in this book. I thought the blood magic was so unique and so aesthetically pleasing. Not to mention this book is so unapologetically queer! It was so much fun on so many fronts that I finished it in a day!

The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo

Thoughts

I have so much to say about this book but I don’t know if I’m ready to dive into it. All I’m going to say for now is that I was really excited and worried about this book, but Nghi Vo does an incredible job reimagining Gatsby.

Panacea >Build 1.0 by Charli Drever

Thoughts

This book absolutely surprised me! I knew I’d like it, but I didn’t realize how much! I loved the statements on the world and the group of unlikely friends working together for a better world. If only we had a plan to save the world like the Panacea!

Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles

Thoughts

Unbelievably, Janella hosted a giveaway for book 2 immediately after I finished the first book and I won! So I’m really excited to share both reviews with you at some point down the line. This book has the most stunning prose I found myself so lost in the beautiful descriptions that I sometimes forgot to pay attention to everything else in the story too! It’s really beautiful!

Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge (translated by Jeremy Tiang)

Thoughts

Strange Beasts of China has such an interesting growing plot. Each chapter feels like its own story until the end when everything starts tying together. It was so interesting to see how the book was structured but I kept getting lost in the magical prose!

Fireheart Tiger by Aliette de Bodard

Thoughts

I’ll be honest, I read a negative review of this book and got so defensive that I speed read it in one sitting because I was so angry about it. Aliette is truly an incredible author and I can’t wait to read more of her books.

Skyhunter by Marie Lu

Thoughts

I’m a huge Marie Lu fan. Marie Lu was one of the authors that got me so into reading diverse stories! The moment I read an Asian American protagonist for the first time, I knew I could never go back. I will always love her books, I can’t wait for book two!

Goddess of Limbo by Lea Falls

Thoughts

I’ve been working with Lea for a guest post on Bookish Brews leading up to the release of this book and you all are in for a TREAT with her post. It’s so good! Of course, I had to read this incredibly imaginative character-focused epic fantasy to go along with it. Keep your eyes peeled for more news here, but in the meantime, add this book to Goodreads!

Book stats?

I always love reflecting on my reading moods and stats at the end of the month. It gives me a good idea of what my mental input was for the past month. That way I can reflect and see my month on a more subconscious level as well! I was clearly in the mood for adventurous, dark, and mysterious books this month, which probably has to do with my strong urge for it to be Fall. I’m so excited to read more intense and dark books and some cozy mysteries (what’s this?)!!
