Diverse Reads in July 2021: Reading Wrap Up

Today’s Brew of Choice: homemade cold brew with cold foam & cinnamon sugar

Good morning everyone! I hope you’re all doing wonderful and are reflecting on the month as we move into August. I’m wondering how I managed to read 19 entire books in July? It’s audiobook central in my home right now. Anyway, I feel like I’ve had a really great month (though I am tired!) in July and so I wanted to share with you my reading journey.

I’m listing here all the fiction books that I read this month. I read 4 non-fiction books as well, but I’m thinking I might do a separate post for those. What do you think?

Please enjoy this long list of books and some brief thoughts I have on them as I’m reflecting on this last month. Grab some coffee and join me! Which reminds me… I think it’s time for my second cup of the day!

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo

Thoughts

This story was the most well-researched historical fiction I’ve read in such a long time. I was really impressed with how many elements from real history make an appearance here. If you’re reading this or planning to read this, you absolutely have to take time to read the author’s note at the end.

Thoughts

This book has just the right amount of steam. It’s cute, fun, and sexy! I adored being able to see a sexy Vietnamese woman in this book in a sex-positive way. It’s a perfect lighthearted read.

Thoughts

The Echo Wife was a fun buddy read that I did with one of my book groups on Goodreads. It was so much fun to read together because we all had such different opinions. I loved how this book came full circle so well, it was really impressive and creepy. It was definitely a perfect quick and creepy read.

Made in Korea by Sarah Suk

Thoughts

This book was so cute! I loved that it centered around teen entrepreneurs, and I especially loved that the school helped the students run businesses in school. I thought the idea of business enemies falling in love was so cute and definitely something I hadn’t really seen before.

We Are Not Free by Traci Chee

Thoughts

This book caught me by surprise. I was in desperate need of new audiobooks and Rania suggested this to me, and let me tell you I was not ready for it. It was incredible and so important. I was emotional the entire time. It’s beautiful, challenging, and difficult.

Left Hand of Dog by SI Clarke

Thoughts

This book absolutely surprised me. I don’t know why, because I’ve read SI Clarke before and her work is absolutely wonderful. I forgot how delightful the societies she builds are. They give me hope for what our world could be, and a glimpse at accepting societies. The best part about this one is it’s absolutely hilarious, but challenging at the same time. How often are you given the gift of reading a comedy that challenges your thinking? Not often enough.

Meet Cute Diary by Emery Lee

Thoughts

Meet Cute Diary was adorable! I love the idea of a website of trans joy and trans love. I was nervous during the whole time right alongside Noah, wondering what will happen to The Diary. There was so much emotion and care put into each of the characters that you could really feel for each one, but still feel like you are on the road to self-discovery with Noah. It was so cute!

XOXO by Axie Oh

Thoughts

All I really can say about this is that I’m a huge XOXO fan now. When does their next album drop? When can I hear it? This book was absolutely adorable. I loved every minute of it. Jenny’s story made me so happy, not just in the sweet romance, but in going to Korea and getting to know her grandmother. It had me feeling giddy like I was seeing a boyband myself!

Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam

Thoughts

Another quick and creepy read. This book was especially creepy because everything felt like you could explain it away just like the characters were doing. After so many things that pile up to be explained away, you start to think, maybe something actually is happening here. It was really wonderful and gripping even in the mundane pieces. What stunning writing!

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

Thoughts

I don’t know if I have to tell you about this one since it’s so popular, but it was completely different than expected. It felt like the 1990’s Romeo + Juliet movie but more gruesome and in Shanghai. I mean, do I need to say more? It was really cool!!

Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley

Thoughts

This book destroyed my soul. I was skeptical at first with the undercover police, but I think we were supposed to be skeptical because so was Daunis. I think this book really played with the intricacies and implications of it so well. Everything is set up so perfectly for you to discover injustices along with Daunis. It was painful and beautiful all at once. Plus the discussion of the intricacies of being biracial is so important, and I was so glad to see it here. Another must-read book!

I Kissed a Girl by Jennet Alexander

Thoughts

I had fun reading this one, but it wasn’t my favorite rom-com of the month! I thought the idea of the upcoming star and the makeup artist was so cute, and the twist at the end was definitely an exciting surprise! It’s definitely a fun light read, and it wasn’t bad at all, I just think I read some other really great rom-coms this month so it didn’t feel as great.

The Dating Playbook by Farrah Rochon

Thoughts

I’ll admit, I didn’t know this was book 2 when I picked this one up. I thought some of the aspects of this book were a little disjointed, but once I realized that it’s book two, all of the disjointedness makes sense. I also read Ace this month, so the sexual attraction over emotional bond felt a little bit strong in this book, but there is definitely an appeal to that as well.
